University College London Lab Highlight - Utilizing Ultrasound Guided Injections
- Sheena Wallington/Jessica Weedon's group
The University College London (UCL) operates 15 in vivo facilities, supported by a dedicated Training Centre that educates animal technicians and scientists in best practices, optimized procedures, and accredited surgical modules, allowing their research community to be trained and educated to maintain a higher standard of animal welfare with an emphasis on the 3R’s within animal research (replacement, reduction, and refinement).
With this in mind, the Prospect T2 high-frequency ultrasound system has been added to their preclinical imaging suite. Ultrasound imaging enables noninvasive longitudinal imaging and highly precise, image-guided injections, ensuring data reproducibility and long-term continuity of specialized in-house skills.
*All data shown were acquired using the Prospect T2 High-frequency Ultrasound System from UCL users.
Ultrasound-Guided Injections
Liver Injections
Ultrasound-Guided Injections Into the Liver
A) This is a B-mode image of the needle advanced into the liver, with B) the landmarks noted. C – D) Examples of ultrasound-guided injections into the liver. E) Image of the group performing an ultrasound-guided injection into the liver.
Liver Tumor - Injections
Ultrasound-guided injections Into a Liver Tumor
Images of the group performing an ultrasound-guided injection directly into a tumor. Images highlighting A) the needle advancing into the liver, B) the needle advancing into the liver tumor, C) the start of injection into the liver tumor, D) the completion of injection, with E) an inset showing the image shown on screen.
Intrathecal (Cerebrospinal Fluid) - Injections
Ultrasound-guided injections into the Cerebrospinal Fluid
A) This is a B-mode image of the spine with B) the landmarks noted and C) the gap opening (approximately 0.23 mm) that the needle needs to advance into. D) An ultrasound video highlighting a successful intrathecal ultrasound-guided injection with dyed solution. To verify successful technique, the dyed spinal cord was confirmed by necropsy of the animal.
